Environmental vs Regular Bulbs

When you walk into a grocery store or a Walmart, you go down the aisle in need for a light bulb. There is only one-two packs of regular light bulbs and the rest are those "swirly" light bulbs. But are those really better?
Cons
Recently, a light burned out at my house (a regular) and was replaced with a swirly light bulb. This room is fairly large. Now the room is this dull tint because of the light bulb. It's annoying because you cannot read or see anything without turning on a second light.
Non-Compatible with some lamps made before light bulbs presence.
 Pros
It is long lasting. I have for the lamp on my desk and I swear it's lasted for more than a year. I would recommend these light bulbs for close-distance but not for ones hanging or long-distance.

Regular Bulbs
Cons
Non-Environmental, Lasts awhile- but not as long as the Environmental bulb.
Pros
Compatible with mostly all lamps, lights up a large room better than an Environmental bulb.
